When I first heard the name of Kasabian's latest song 'You're In Love With a Psycho', I was disappointed with the extremely derogatory language used and then seeing the music video left me utterly speechless. The way mental illness has been portrayed in this video is unacceptable; it is a mockery to those who are suffering and completely invalidates them.
Though I feel like as a society we have come a long way in changing the attitudes and behaviours around mental health it at times feels like we are going backwards when mental health is represented in such a manner. Having spoken to many within the mental health community regarding this video it is clear to see the amount of distress it has caused, not only because of the way a serious matter has been used for a band's profit, but because to those who do not necessarily have a good education in Mental Health may believe that this is an accurate portrayal and thus increasing stigma.
Psychiatric hospitals should not be feared and portrayed as dangerous as after all they are, just like a hospital treating cancer, there to treat their patients with an illness and support them through a difficult time. If a music video was released mocking patients with cancer the world would be up in arms, we need to treat mental illness with the same respect. No person deserves to have an illness that is beyond their control mocked, and it is important to understand that a person is not their illness, they may suffer with an illness but this does not define them.
I believe this highlights just how important the work that Time to Change and other mental health organisations carry out, because this is not okay and I strive for a society free from stigma and discrimination.
